• He was an Indian actor who appeared in mainstream commercial Indian films, as well as independent and art films.
• He was awarded Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award of India, in 1990.
• He was honoured at the 89th Academy Awards in memoriam segment for his contribution in Indian and world cinema.
• He won the National Film Award for Arohan (1982) and Ardh Satya (1983).
• In 2004, he was honoured with the Honorary Officer of the Order of the British Empire for services to The British Film Industry.
