Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar, Educator

A renowned Indian educator and social reformer, Ishwar Chandra worked hard to simplify and modernise Bengali prose. He also rationalised and simplified the Bengali alphabet and type. He is considered the “father of Bengali prose”. He raised voice in support of Hindu widow remarriage and worked for many social causes. The Government of Jharkhand on 26 September 2019 named Jamtara district’s Karmatand block as Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar Block as a mark of respect on the birth anniversary of the great social reformer.
